How long does a sauna last?

If you are considering investing in a sauna, you may be wondering how long you can enjoy this purchase. The lifespan of a sauna is influenced, among other things, by the materials used, the type of heating, the location of the sauna and how it is maintained. In this blog, we dive deeper into this and offer practical tips to extend the life of your sauna.

Factors affecting the lifespan of a sauna

The durability of your sauna depends on a number of factors. Understanding these can help you make the right choices in both purchase and maintenance.

Different types of wood

The choice of wood plays a crucial role in how long your sauna will last. For our saunas, we choose thermowood, a type of wood created by heat treating Scandinavian pine from sustainably managed forests. This type of wood combines a beautiful, dark brown color with sustainable advantages: a high insulation value, a lifespan of 15 to 25 years, and an FSC label. Thermowood is similar to Red Cedar, but offers the same quality at a lower price, making it the ideal choice for an environmentally friendly outdoor sauna that lasts.

Type of heating

The type of heating system in your sauna also has a big impact on its maintenance needs and ultimately its lifespan. Electric heaters require less maintenance than wood-burning heaters. Wood-burning heaters require regular cleaning to prevent build-up of ash and soot, read in our guide on cleaning a sauna heater.

Intensity of use

How often a sauna is used also plays a role. Saunas that are used daily wear out faster than those used at home perhaps only a few times a week. This frequent use can lead to wear and tear faster.

The area where the sauna is located

Outdoor saunas that face weather and wind may require more maintenance, so keep this in mind when choosing the location of your sauna.

Extreme weather can cause external wood components to age differently if not properly maintained. Read more about what to look out for with a garden sauna here.

Maintenance of the sauna

Proper maintenance is important to extend the life of your sauna. Regularly cleaning and sanitizing your sauna and ensuring adequate air circulation are essential to prevent mold and wood rot.

How do you extend the life of a sauna?

Maintenance of your sauna is an important part of keeping your sauna beautiful for much longer. An occasional cleaning can make all the difference. Clean and keep the wooden surfaces clean, oil your sauna annually and maintain the heater. Read all the comprehensive tips and tricks to extend the life of your sauna here.

When is it time to purchase a new sauna?

There are several signs that may indicate it is time for a new sauna. If the materials begin to deteriorate, the heating gets worse, or the cost of repair exceeds the price of a new sauna, it may be time to upgrade. Visit our showroom for options known for their durability and quality. For more information, contact us through our customer service department.

By considering these factors and ensuring regular maintenance, you can enjoy relaxing sauna experiences for years to come.
