Outdoor sauna maintenance

When an outdoor sauna is showing off in your garden, you naturally want to enjoy it for as long as possible. Preferably enjoy relaxing moments and fun for everyone in a Tønsauna for years on end. If you want that, then logically the sauna needs maintenance. An occasional cleaning and some extra attention will do wonders. Here you will find all the information you need for maintaining your outdoor sauna.

This is how to maintain your sauna

How long a sauna lasts depends on several factors. If you maintain it properly, you can enjoy a Tønsauna for many years. After the hot summer, rainy autumn, freezing winter and sunny spring, it is actually always a good time to maintain the outdoor sauna. If you want to enjoy the sauna for as long as possible, we recommend giving the Tønsauna a bigger service every change of season. Or at least check carefully if this is necessary.

For the maintenance of the barrel sauna, there are actually three parts you need to address. Maintaining the outside of the sauna, the inside and the heater. This applies to both wood-fired sauna and electric sauna.

This is how to maintain your sauna

  • Step 1: Remove any dirt from the outside of the sauna, either with a dry cloth or by rinsing it with the garden hose
  • Step 2: Treat the exterior wood with Tar oil (make sure the sauna is dry and check the weather notice on two dry days after treatment)
  • Step 3: Set the doors when you notice sagging due to the action of the wood
  • Step 4: Clean the inside, including the heater of the sauna

Our barrel sauna: The Tønsauna

Barrel saunas provide optimal relaxation and freedom. With a barrel sauna you never have to visit a wellness resort again, you just have this in your own backyard. Away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life was rarely so accessible and close at hand. Carefree relaxation and letting time slip by is then not difficult at all, in a barrel sauna it happens all by itself.

Maintaining the exterior

Our Tønsaunas are made with materials that will last for years. The sauna has to endure quite a lot due to the temperature change from cold to warm or rain and wind. Therefore, it is important to give the wooden exterior of the sauna a good maintenance once a year. If the wood remains in optimal condition, you will enjoy your barrel sauna longer.

The wood of the sauna is best treated with our tar oil. It is important that it is an agent that breathes, and is not a slurry that completely seals the sauna.

Interior sauna maintenance

The inside of the Tønsauna does not really need much maintenance. Maintaining the inside of the sauna mainly means cleaning it well by wiping up dirt from the floor and cleaning the benches with a cloth and possibly Saunaclean. It is best to make sure the sauna stays as clean as possible. You do this, for example, by using a towel so that the benches do not get too dirty.

Sauna heater cleaning

When maintaining the sauna, it is very important not to forget the sauna heater. With a wood-fired heater, this is just a little more work. With a wood-fired stove, you remove the ashes from the stove, clean the window and wipe the outside with a cloth. The latter is all you do with an electric stove. Do you pour a lot of water over the stones? Then remove these from the stove as well and rinse them clean with water and soapy water.
