What does heating a private sauna cost?

Only when you have a sauna with electrical features does it incur power costs. This may be the case when using an electric heater, such as those from Harvia or HUUM, or if you have LED lighting installed. The LED lighting option does not involve significant additional costs. For example, it is comparable to the energy consumption of LED lighting in other parts of your home.

What costs should you think about with an electric heater?

When we talk about costs of a private sauna, there are two expenses that you can think about after purchase.

Kilowatts: With an electric heater, it is about kilowatts that are counted. The number of kW is what the heater has consumed in terms of power approximately when it is on for an hour. Therefore, the kWh abbreviation (kilowatt hour) is used. It actually indicates how much power the stove delivers per hour. 

At the ANWB you can see the current price of kWh per hour. This keeps you well up-to-date.

Take for example the Harvia Vega, one of our electric heaters. This stove consumes 8 kW. Once it is on for an hour, you consume 8 x 0.35 = €2.80 per hour. We have different heaters with different kW, so this calculation does not apply to every heater. To get your sauna to a nice temperature, it is important that your heater has been on for about an hour before use. Once it is up to temperature, it will be ready for over an hour for a wonderful sauna session.

Power current: If you want to connect an electric sauna heater, power current is a must. Power current is different from standard current, with a higher voltage of 400V. With power current, we use not two, but four wires. Three of them are charged, and one is a kind of neutral wire. Actually, we call it three-phase. What this means practically? You get power that is three times stronger. And according to Essent, the cost stays the same. 

What does a sauna with wood stove cost?

If you want to heat a sauna, you usually need about 1 to 2 bags of wood. The price of a bag of wood varies around 7 euros, depending on the supplier. If you have enough firewood of your own, you don't need to purchase it. This will save you the extra cost.

General cost per month

The monthly cost of a sauna can vary. There are recurring costs, such as electricity or wood for heating, and periodic costs, such as the annual maintenance of the sauna. We recommend treating the wood of the sauna twice a year with Tar Oil (at €42.50 per can).

The fixed costs of a sauna are mainly related to heating and any LED lighting. These costs therefore depend on usage. For example, if you enjoy your sauna for an hour twice a week, the additional costs are between €40 and €100 per month.
