Model: Tønsauna 400, wood-fired
Since: November 2021
For a few months, Harry and his wife have been enjoying the Tønsauna 400 with dressing room and veranda in their garden. Harry: "We chose the largest size because it is located a bit behind our house. Then it is very nice to have a changing room. It's very practical and it's just a bit more spacious."
The search for the perfect sauna
Once they had decided that there should be a sauna in the garden, the search began for the perfect sauna. "We have a natural swimming pond. We wanted to make optimal use of that. So then we thought, then there should actually be a sauna as well."
"We first started orienting ourselves online. When we knew we wanted to go for a barrel sauna, we started looking at what options and possibilities were available. We visited several companies, including Welvaere. We had a good feeling about that, so we chose the Tønsauna 400 from you."
And you like it perfectly!
"We even say now, actually we should have done that earlier. We usually do three rounds at a time. First for 15 minutes and then twice for 12 minutes or so. We do that once or twice a week. Especially at this time of year, that's really nice. We use the swimming pond for cooling off.
First I always do a gentle warm-up lap, without the cold water. But then the second and third rounds I definitely go into the water to cool down as well. Especially after working out or playing a round of golf, if it's really cold outside or if we've walked our dog through the woods, you can warm up in the sauna afterwards and have a great time."
A dream garden full of greenery and relaxation
We would love to copy and paste Harry's garden behind our own house. "Behind the house it is mainly focused on the natural swimming pond. We also have a big weeping willow and there are some fruit trees on the other side. The style is a little park-like.
Near the house we have another sitting area with a fireplace. In the summer we can sit out there for a long time. We really like being outside and working in the garden anyway. Unfortunately, we recently had to cut down our big chestnut tree, so I am now splitting about 10 cubic meters of wood for the fireplace and sauna."
Complete sauna session = pure relaxation
They chose the wood-burning stove. For the experience, because it's more natural. And that fits perfectly with the natural swimming pond! "The stoking goes very well. Also the dosing is good to do, with the ash drawer open and closed or I open the door for a moment. Half an hour to three quarters of an hour in advance we light stove, then after half an hour it is already at about 50°C."
"We then throw some extra wood and some moisture on it and then we do the first round of warm-up. After that, it quickly goes up to the 80°C/90°C. We find that a nice temperature. Sometimes we even go a few degrees warmer."
The feel of the spa, just in the garden
To make the sauna session complete, Harry and his wife also do regular infusions and provide good relaxation between sauna sessions. "Usually at the end of the session, we put some liquid on the stones and stand up for a while, then it feels really hot. We are still experimenting a bit with the different scents. I always like eucalyptus, but we're also trying the birch scent now, for example."
A light beer and cigar for in between should not be missed either. "We then put the beer in the pond to get cold. And in between we then just sit outside to cool off. We put the sheepskins in the chairs and put on some music. It's very relaxing."
