Lovely to put on your slippers and bathrobe in the evening and walk down a path full of autumn leaves in the garden to your own outdoor sauna. The warmth meets you. A wish that many bon vivants have; your own sauna in the garden. A frequently asked question is then logically, what exactly does a sauna cost? In this blog, we answer the question of what it costs.
The cost of an outdoor sauna varies greatly. And vary, of course, between size, material and additional options. On average, a sauna at Welvaere costs about 10,000 euros. This is always totally dependent on the choices you make.
So you always have the possibility to expand the sauna with luxury options. Think of a different type of wood, different heater, comfort upgrade, panorama window and construction by Welvaere. So you can make the purchase of a sauna as expensive as you want.
Only when you have electricity in your sauna does it cost electricity. This can be because of an electric heater from Harvia or HUUM, for example, or because you have LED lighting in the sauna. The latter does not have frighteningly high additional costs. Think for example of the same as LED lighting in your living room.
When you have your sauna heated by an electric heater, the power is always displayed in kilowatts. For example, our Harvia Cilindro. This heater has a power rating of 9 kW. That means that when the heater is on for an hour it uses about 9 kW of energy. You can also describe that as 9 kilowatt hours (9kWh).
According to Pricewise the average kWh price is 0.40 cents up to a consumption of 2900 kWh do you get above that then you pay the cost of your energy supplier this is because of the energy ceiling. This is different for everyone.
So when this Harvia Cilindro heater is on for an hour, you consume about 9 times 40 cents. That amounts to just under 4 euros per hour. So if you have another type of stove you can use this same calculation example: The number of kWh x 40 cents. This is the cost per hour.
Ultimately, of course, these costs depend on usage. Do you use it every night or only an hour a week. An electric sauna heater takes about an hour to heat the Tønsauna to a fine temperature, then if you enjoy a few sauna sessions for more than an hour, you will spend about six euros per session. Always a lot less than a day in a sauna complex.
An electric sauna heater must always be connected to power current. Power current is slightly different from ordinary electricity (230V). With power current, it is a lot higher at 400V. With "normal power," electricity is supplied by two wires. One wire has voltage and the other wire is a neutral wire. The wire with voltage is called the phase.
Power electricity works with a three-phase connection. With power current, not two, but four wires are used. Three of the wires carry voltage and a neutral wire. Power current can therefore be called three phase. In practice, it means that the current you get is three times stronger.
According to Essent, the cost of the power supplied remains the same. However, it is possible that an appliance operating on power current will use considerably more electricity than a small household appliance. However, you do not pay more for power current than normal.
When you want to fire up a sauna you use on average about 1 or 2 bags of wood. One bag of wood costs about 7 euros, but this also varies depending on the supplier. If you have plenty of firewood of your own, you do not need to arrange this and there are no additional costs.
So the cost of a sauna per month can vary a lot. You have some recurring costs like electricity or wood for heating and periodic costs like the maintenance of the sauna which needs to be done once a year on average.
So the fixed cost of a sauna is really only in the heating and possibly some LED lighting. This really all depends on usage. If you enjoy an hour in your own sauna twice a week, you will spend between 50 and 100 euros per month in additional costs.
