Benefits of a hot bath

Bathing has been done since time immemorial. Think of the sweltering bathhouses of the Roman Empire, the steamy hammam of the Middle East and the medicinal baths of ancient Asia. Not only was it seen as a way to socialize and relax; history also teaches us that the hot bath would be enriching to both body and mind.

Benefits of a hot bath at a glance

  1. You burn calories
  2. You get a stable blood sugar
  3. You have less muscle pain
  4. You sleep better

1. Burning calories in a hot bath

Spending an hour in a hot bath has been shown to burn a similar number of calories as walking briskly for half an hour. As core body temperature rises, so does metabolism.

No, this doesn't mean you never have to exercise again! Exercise remains more intense, and the health benefits go far beyond just burning calories, of course. But that extra bar of chocolate you sweat off in the bathtub, of course, is a nice bonus.

2. Blood sugar becomes more stable

Do you have fluctuating blood sugars? Then a hot bath can also work in your favor. In fact, your glucose spike can drop by 10 percent! The same proteins that are released during inflammation and infection to protect your body are also released during a hot bath.

To protect your nervous system from the long-term damage that high blood sugar can cause, these proteins temporarily lower blood sugar levels.

3. Hot bath is good for your muscles, relieving muscle pain

Just exercised for an hour too long? Or were you a little too enthusiastic with the weights after all? We all know the harmless - but often hellish - shoots that shoot through our bodies when we wake up the next day with sore muscles. A warm bath stimulates blood circulation, allowing your muscles to relax for a while, and thanks to the accelerated metabolism, damage is repaired more smoothly.

4. You sleep better

You probably already figured out that your body temperature rises while taking a hot bath. So that also means it has to cool down again! And that cooling process, that also happens before you go to sleep.

So when you get out of the hot bath and your body starts to cool down, it means little more to your brain than: sleep! Your metabolic functions slow down, you start producing melatonin, and in no time you won't be able to keep your eyes open. The latter will be slightly off, but at least it makes sure your body is preparing for a wonderful night's sleep.

Is a hot bath good for the flu?

The flu and a cold is a virus. A hot bath does not necessarily solve that. As written above, a hot bath speeds up blood circulation and this prevents bacteria and viruses from spreading more easily. Our body's immune system is activated and supported.

A hot bath is good for the flu we can say. It is a boon to your body during flu and cold season because of the temperature of the water and any aromas. Just never stay in the warm water for more than 20 minutes if you are not feeling well. Ten minutes is actually enough.

A hot bath is really good for you

Not such a crazy idea of those Romans, Asians and Ottomans. So remember this "history lesson" the next time you are counting sheep or can't get out of bed because you have been at the gym too long!

And such a hot bath can be done right in your own backyard. Just think of a lovely warm wood-fired hot tub waiting for you the moment you return from a running session. Then you really notice how good a hot bath is for your muscles!
