Hot tub tubs compared: why the material really makes a difference

When you are looking for a hot tub, when you pick one, you most likely pay attention to its appearance, size or heating method. But there is one component that is at least as important, and that is the hot tub shell. Because the tub can be seen as the heart of the hot tub; it ensures that you sit comfortably, how long the water stays warm, how much maintenance you need and also how long the hot tub will last. At Welvaere , we work exclusively with fiberglass-reinforced (composite) tubs - and that is a very conscious choice. We are happy to explain why, and how these tubs compare to alternatives such as acrylic tubs and HDPE/LDPE plastic tubs.

Strong, durable and built for comfort. Welvaeres fiberglass tubs

When you step into the hot tub, you want to relax without worry. No thinking about wear and tear, no hassle with maintenance. Just enjoy it. And exactly for that reason, we at Welvaere do not choose the easiest or cheapest tub, but the best: Fully fiberglass reinforced composite tubs.

Each tub we install in our hot tubs is hand-built using the same techniques used in yacht building. A world in which durability, precision and weather resistance are essential. No mass production with standard shapes, but high-level craftsmanship. Built layer by layer from high-quality materials:

  • BÜFA® Marine Gelcoat - the scratch-resistant, colorfast finish that protects your hot tub from sun and chemicals.
  • VE-barrier coat - an additional protective layer that prevents osmosis and moisture.
  • Multiple layers of fiberglass-reinforced polyester - for a rock-solid and durable base.
  • Coremat - strategically placed in areas where extra strength or comfort is desired, such as seating areas.

The result? A solid, self-supporting unit that withstands the elements, lasts for years, and at the same time sits wonderfully. Because each layer contributes to the construction, no metal frame is needed and no weak spots develop. The hot tub feels solid, looks beautiful and is ready for intensive use - in summer and winter.

The manufacturing process of these tubs is intensive and of high quality. As a result, the end result is not only sturdier and more durable than acrylic or HDPE/LDPE, for example, but also visually and ergonomically superior. That quality can be seen and felt in the tub - and yes, it comes at a higher cost. But it gets you years of worry-free use, comfort and reliability.

A tub that will last for years

Our tubs are hand-built using techniques from yacht building - where durability, precision and weather resistance are paramount. No mass production, but craftsmanship with high-quality materials such as BÜFA® Marine Gelcoat, VE-barrier coat and multiple layers of fiberglass-reinforced polyester. Strategically applied Coremat also provides extra comfort in the right places. The result: a strong, durable cockpit made to last for years.

Acrylic tubs: smooth gloss, but not built to last

At first glance, acrylic tubs seem like an attractive choice. They look sleek and glossy. No wonder that many brands - working primarily with mass production - choose these tubs. But behind that beautiful shiny tub secretly lurks quite a few drawbacks.

An acrylic tub is constructed from a thin plastic sheet that is vacuum formed into shape. For added strength, a backing layer of fiberglass or plastic is added afterwards. This construction focuses primarily on appearance rather than content quality.

Because although acrylic looks very attractive visually, in practice the material turns out to have some limitations. And especially in an outdoor environment - where the hot tub is exposed to sun, moisture, temperature differences and intensive use - the drawbacks quickly become apparent.

The disadvantages of acrylic

  • Top coat is purely aesthetic - the acrylic itself adds nothing to the strength of the tub.
  • Delamination hazard - the bond between the acrylic sheet and the backing layer is technically complex and prone to loosening.
  • Scratch prone - fine scratches occur quickly and are difficult to repair without color or gloss differences.
  • Limited forming freedom - vacuum forming allows only simple, standard shapes; ergonomics is often secondary.
  • Less insulating - heat loss is faster due to thin layers and limited build-up.
  • Not optimal for outdoor use - acrylic discolors faster, can develop micro cracks and is more susceptible to UV damage.
  • Prone to overheating - at high temperatures, certain elements in the material can dissolve, causing permanent damage to the tub and rendering it unusable.

HDPE and LDPE tubs: inexpensive, but not for the long term

You are bound to come across this material too when orienting for hot tubs; models with a tub made of HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) or LDPE (Low Density Polyethylene). These types are often used in inexpensive or entry-level models. The reason? They are quick and cheap to produce, lightweight and machine moldable.

Looking purely at price, this seems like an attractive choice. But in practice, these materials clearly come with limitations. Especially if you are looking for a luxurious wellness experience that will last for years.

The plastic base makes them less sophisticated in appearance, and because they consist of standard shapes, comfort is usually limited. In addition, they are more susceptible to scratching, discoloration and structural deformation - especially with prolonged outdoor use.

Disadvantages of HDPE/LDPE tubs:

  • Less aesthetically pleasing - the appearance is often simple and plastic-like, with no luxurious finish.
  • Standard shapes - machine production leaves little room for ergonomic seating comfort.
  • Susceptible to scratching and discoloration - especially when exposed to sunlight and weathering.
  • Not self-supporting - the tub often needs additional support to maintain its shape.‍
  • Limited life - more susceptible to deformation, hairline cracks and wear.

🔥 7 reasons why our hot tub tubs are better than all the alternatives:

  1. Completely self-supporting
The tub is strong enough on its own and does not need a metal frame to stay in shape. That means: fewer parts, less chance of wear and tear, and a robust unit that can take a beating.

  2. Constructed from A-quality materials
We work with high-quality coatings, such as BÜFA® Marine Gelcoat and VE-barriercoat - materials that are also used in yacht building. They offer excellent protection against UV, moisture and osmosis.

  3. No adhesion problems
Because our tubs are homogeneously constructed, all layers form one strong whole. No risk of detaching top layers or delamination, as with acrylic or plastic tubs.

  4. Scratch-resistant, UV-resistant and colorfast
The finish withstands life outdoors: sun, rain, frost, cleaning agents and intensive use. Even after years, your tub will retain its color, shine and quality.

  5. Comfortable and ergonomic
Thanks to our own molds and artisanal production method, we can design tubs with flowing lines, comfortable seat shapes and smart layouts. No hard corners or standard seats, but truly customized relaxation.

  6. Smartly insulated
Thanks to solid construction and smart material choices, the water in our tubs stays hot longer. That means: less energy consumption, more comfort, and always ready to step in.

  7. Sustainable and circular
Our tubs are made to last, but also with an eye to the future. They are hard-wearing, low-maintenance and - if necessary - locally repairable. So you avoid waste and enjoy your investment longer.
