You can't wait until you can relax in your own Tønsauna and imagine it all; after a long working day, together or alone, enjoying the warmth and steam of the sauna. Forget everything you have to do and give your body the rest it has needed for a while.
Before the time comes, it is important that your garden is fully prepared for the arrival of your new outdoor sauna. Perhaps you have had the perfect spot in your head for a long time, or maybe you need to take a closer look at your garden to see which spot is best. The surface on which you place your sauna is the most important factor. In this blog you can read which surface is best for your Tønsauna.
What size sauna did you choose? The numbers behind the Tønsaunas indicate the length. So you need that space anyway. In addition, you must of course be able to get in and out comfortably. It is also important to consider the space we or you need to build the sauna.
In the Netherlands you can choose to have our sauna builders come build the sauna in your garden. They need about 50 cm of working space around the sauna. Even if you choose to build it yourself, you will need this space. If you live in Belgium, then your Tønsauna will be delivered in its entirety and you will need to provide sufficient space for the tap.
Our smallest sauna, the Tønsauna 160, weighs about 680 kg and the largest, the Tønsauna 400, about 1020 kg. You can imagine that if it has rained and the sauna stands directly on grass or sand, there is a good chance that it will slowly sink. It is quite a weight for a swampy surface.
In addition, it is a good idea to check whether the water can drain away properly and whether the surface of the sauna remains relatively dry. If you choose to place the sauna directly on the grass or another soft surface, there is a good chance that after a rain shower the water will stand for a longer time and the ground will remain wet for a long time. This is not convenient for the wood on the underside of your sauna.
In short, you need a solid base that will keep the sauna standing exactly where you put it and keep the wood on the bottom for a long time.
This is what we see most often with our customers, the Tønsauna placed on a terrace. Between the grass, gravel or piece of garden a piece of paving is laid where the sauna is placed exactly on it. A practical way to place the sauna in the garden.
With this solid foundation, rainwater can drain easily and it is easy with getting in and out, without slipping or getting dirty feet easily. In addition to laying a patio with stones, you can also choose to pour a foundation.
Our Tønsaunas are barrel saunas: a round wooden barrel on its side. The sauna leans on a beam construction. The most important thing is that this construction is placed at least on a solid surface.
For example, what we regularly see is that the sauna is placed on the grass, but tiles are placed under the beam construction. That way you have greenery or a piece of garden around the sauna, but it stands firmly on a strong surface.
Another option is a wooden decking under the Tønsauna. If it is sturdy, with a strong structure underneath, this is also a suitable surface for your outdoor sauna. Of course, you have some maintenance to do with it, but it gives the wellness spot a nice luxurious look.
Finally, you can also choose honeycomb mats with gravel. The mats that you place under the gravel create a solid surface for your barrel sauna. If it has rained, the water can easily drain away and you can choose from many different types and colors. We also have this option in our Experience Centers in Nijkerk and Deinze.
Have you chosen the foundation? Then, depending on what kind of sauna and what options you have chosen, it is important to take care of the electricity before it comes. If you have chosen an electrically heated sauna, for example, you will need power current. You can read more about this in our help section.
